What is the STAR Method in Behavioral Interviewing?
The Star Method in interviewing is as follows
S= Situation
T= Task
A= Action
R= Results
The S or situation is an example of something that you achieved in the past that completely resulted in a positive development. Here is an example.. I set a goal to run a mile in 5 minutes and I did it in four minutes and forty five seconds.
The T or the task is the training you had to do and possibly the nutritional aspect of this.
The A is the action. The action that was involved in the task. You had to wake up at six a.m. every morning and do eight hundred meter runs at 2 and a half minutes each to prepare for the mile.
R or the Result is the result of what occurred from the previous steps.
This is how you should answer all behavioral interview questions. So if you are asked a question follow these steps. Let's practice another one.
Tell me about a time you had to influence someone?
1. Situation = My little brother didn't want to go to Disneyland.
2. Task= Convince little brother to go
3. Action= Told my little brother about all the great rides. I promised he would meet Mickey Mouse and I would buy him Mouseketeer Ears.
4. Result= My little brother came to Disneyland and had a wonderful time.
This is the method or the way you should answer questions in a behavioral interview and you will do great. Good luck with your interview and I hope you land the job!
